paresis
Definition
Partial or incomplete paralysis: muscular weakness with diminished but not abolished voluntary movement, typically affecting motor function while sensation is preserved. Less severe than complete paralysis (the suffix -plegia).
Clinical context
Clinically, paresis denotes weakness (e.g. MRC grade 1-4) whereas plegia denotes complete loss of movement. Classic examples: general paresis of neurosyphilis, and Todd paresis (transient focal weakness after a seizure).
Mnemonic
PARESIS = 'partial' - a partial letting-go of muscle strength; weaker than -plegia (total paralysis).
