Definition
a localized collection of pus in tissues, organs, or circulatory spaces, usually caused by bacterial infection
Clinical context
A 65-year-old diabetic patient presents with a painful, fluctuant mass on his left thigh that has been growing over the past week. Physical examination reveals erythematous, warm skin over the lesion with surrounding induration. CT scan shows a well-defined fluid collection with surrounding tissue inflammation. The patient has a history of recent skin trauma and poor glycemic control.
