agnosia
Definition
Loss of ability to recognize or identify objects, persons, or phenomena despite intact sensory function
Clinical context
A 65-year-old stroke patient presents with inability to recognize her husband when he enters the room, despite intact vision and ability to describe his facial features. She also cannot identify common objects placed in her hand, though she can describe their function and texture. Neurological examination reveals preserved visual fields and sensory function but significant difficulties with object recognition and identification.
