Definition
A severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance
Clinical context
A 25-year-old woman develops sudden onset wheezing, facial swelling, and hypotension within minutes of receiving a penicillin injection. She has a history of shellfish allergy and is now presenting with widespread urticaria. Her blood pressure is 85/50 mmHg and she appears anxious and distressed. This case represents anaphylaxis requiring immediate treatment with epinephrine.
