Definition

A congenital malformation in which the brain and skull are underdeveloped or absent, resulting in the absence of the cerebral hemispheres and often the brainstem

Clinical context

A newborn presents with a large, open cranial defect and absence of normal brain structures. The infant has no brainstem reflexes and cannot maintain vital functions. This condition is incompatible with life and results from failure of the neural tube to close properly during early embryonic development.
