ankylosis
Definition
Abnormal condition characterized by stiffness and rigidity of joints or bones
Clinical context
A 78-year-old patient presents with severe joint stiffness and limited range of motion in the right hip following a hip replacement surgery. Physical examination reveals the joint has become fixed in a position of flexion with no ability to extend. Imaging shows extensive bony ankylosis with abnormal fusion of joint surfaces.
Mnemonic
ANKYLOSIS = ANKLE (joint) + KOSIS (stiffness) = Joint stiffness and rigidity
