Definition
abnormal narrowing of the aortic valve
Clinical context
A 72-year-old male presents with exertional dyspnea, angina, and syncope over the past month. On examination, a harsh systolic murmur radiates to the carotids, and he has a delayed carotid upstroke. Echocardiogram reveals severe aortic stenosis with a valve area of 0.8 cm² and left ventricular ejection fraction of 45%. The patient requires urgent aortic valve replacement.
