Definition
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes (bronchi) in the respiratory system
Clinical context
A 28-year-old smoker presents with a persistent cough productive of yellowish sputum for the past week. On examination, there are bilateral wheezes and crackles. Chest X-ray shows hyperinflated lungs with increased bronchovascular markings. The patient's symptoms are most consistent with acute bronchitis secondary to viral infection.
