Inflammation of the bronchi and lungs, typically caused by bacterial infection
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man presents to the emergency department with fever, productive cough, and shortness of breath that started 3 days ago. Physical examination reveals crackles in the lower lung fields. Chest X-ray shows patchy infiltrates consistent with infection. He is diagnosed with bronchopneumonia and started on appropriate antibiotics.
