bronchoscopy
Definition
Medical examination of the bronchi using a bronchoscope
Clinical context
A 65-year-old smoker presents with a persistent cough, hemoptysis, and weight loss. Chest X-ray reveals a hilar mass suspicious for lung cancer. The pulmonologist recommends bronchoscopy to visualize the airways and obtain tissue samples for biopsy. During the procedure, a lesion is identified in the right upper lobe bronchus with tissue confirmed to be adenocarcinoma.
