abnormal deposition of calcium salts in tissues
Clinical context
A 65-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease presents with painful nodules over her elbows and knees. Physical examination reveals hard, white deposits in her skin and subcutaneous tissue. Laboratory studies show elevated serum calcium and phosphorus levels. The patient's condition is attributed to mineral metabolism disorders common in end-stage renal disease. The calcific deposits are visible on X-rays as well as palpable to the examiner.
