cellulitis
Definition
inflammation of the connective tissue and subcutaneous tissue, often caused by bacterial infection
Clinical context
A 65-year-old diabetic patient presents with red, warm, and swollen left lower leg that has been progressively worsening over 2 days. On examination, there is erythema extending from the ankle to the knee with pitting edema and tender regional lymphadenopathy. The patient has a history of minor trauma to the area and elevated white blood cell count. Cellulitis is diagnosed based on clinical presentation and requires prompt antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.
