Definition

A fungal infection caused by Coccidioides species, characterized by granulomatous lesions that resemble grains or cocci under microscopic examination

Clinical context

A 45-year-old immunocompetent man presents with a two-week history of cough, fever, and malaise after visiting a desert region. Chest X-ray reveals hilar lymphadenopathy and pulmonary nodules. Sputum microscopy shows characteristic spherules containing endospores. The patient's condition worsens despite antibiotic treatment, and he develops skin lesions and joint pain. His serum antibodies are positive for Coccidioides species.
