The loss of myelin from nerve fibers, resulting in impaired nerve function
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with progressive weakness in her legs and difficulty with coordination. She has a history of optic neuritis diagnosed 2 years ago. MRI shows multiple lesions in the brain and spinal cord. Her vision has worsened significantly over the past month. Lumbar puncture reveals oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid. This patient has multiple sclerosis with demyelination affecting the central nervous system.
