diabetic angiopathy
Definition
A pathological condition affecting blood vessels, particularly in diabetic patients
Clinical context
A 58-year-old male with 15 years of poorly controlled diabetes presents with progressive numbness and pain in both feet. On examination, he has decreased sensation to light touch and diminished peripheral pulses. Doppler ultrasound reveals significant arterial stenosis in the lower extremities. These findings are consistent with diabetic angiopathy causing microvascular and macrovascular complications.
Mnemonic
DIABETIC ANGIOPATHY: Diabetic patients develop both small vessel (microaneurysms) and large vessel (atherosclerosis) damage, leading to retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and peripheral arterial disease
