Definition
inflammation of the duodenum
Clinical context
A 45-year-old man presents with epigastric pain that radiates to his back, nausea, and vomiting. He has a history of chronic alcohol use and reports that the pain is worse when he eats. On examination, there is tenderness in the epigastric region. Endoscopy reveals erythematous, edematous mucosa in the duodenal bulb. Laboratory studies show elevated amylase and lipase levels. The patient is diagnosed with duodenitis.
