dysuria

dys- ur/o -ia

Definition

Difficult or painful urination

Clinical context

A 28-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with a 3-day history of painful urination and urinary frequency. She describes a burning sensation that occurs with each urination and has noticed pink-tinged urine. On examination, she has suprapubic tenderness but no fever or costovertebral angle tenderness. Urinalysis reveals white blood cells and nitrites, consistent with a urinary tract infection.
