elliptocytosis
Definition
A blood disorder characterized by the presence of elliptical (oval-shaped) red blood cells instead of the normal biconcave disc shape
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with fatigue and shortness of breath on exertion. Laboratory studies reveal anemia with distinctive oval-shaped red blood cells on peripheral smear. Her family history is significant for similar symptoms in her brother. The diagnosis of elliptocytosis is confirmed with osmotic fragility testing.
