endocardiosis
Definition
a pathological condition affecting the inner lining of the heart
Clinical context
A 65-year-old patient presents with fatigue and shortness of breath on exertion. On examination, a pansystolic murmur is heard best at the apex, and echocardiography reveals thickened, fibrotic valve leaflets with reduced mobility. The patient's symptoms are most likely due to chronic endocardiosis affecting the mitral valve. A 45-year-old patient presents with fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Echocardiography shows vegetations on the tricuspid valve leaflets, and blood cultures grow Streptococcus viridans. The patient's condition is consistent with infective endocarditis, an inflammatory endocardial disease.
Mnemonic
ENDOcardiosis = END (endocardium) + OSIS (disease)
