Definition

abnormal excessive growth or development of the endometrium (lining of the uterus)

Clinical context

A 55-year-old woman presents with irregular uterine bleeding for 3 months. She is postmenopausal and has a history of obesity. Pelvic examination reveals an enlarged uterus with normal adnexa. Endometrial biopsy shows abnormal excessive growth of the uterine lining with cellular atypia. This condition carries a significant risk for progression to endometrial adenocarcinoma if left untreated.
