endometritis
Definition
inflammation of the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus)
Clinical context
A 28-year-old postpartum woman presents with fever, abdominal pain, and purulent vaginal discharge 48 hours after delivery. On examination, there is uterine tenderness and cervical motion tenderness. Blood cultures are negative, and ultrasound shows thickened endometrial lining. The most likely diagnosis is endometritis, a common puerperal infection requiring prompt antibiotic treatment.
