Definition

Separation of the epidermis from the dermis, often caused by blistering or trauma

Clinical context

A 23-year-old patient presents to the emergency department with painful blisters across the hands and feet that developed after handling a new household cleaner. The lesions are tense and easily rupture, leaving raw, painful surfaces. On examination, Nikolsky's sign is positive, indicating separation of the epidermis from the dermis. The patient reports similar episodes in the past that were triggered by exposure to chemical irritants.
