focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
Definition
A kidney disease characterized by scarring (sclerosis) in some of the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli), specifically in a focal and segmental pattern
Clinical context
A 28-year-old man presents with nephrotic syndrome and hypertension. Kidney biopsy reveals scarring in some glomeruli, but not all, with involvement limited to certain segments of the affected glomeruli. This pattern is characteristic of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
