folliculitis

follicul -itis

Definition

inflammation of hair follicles

Clinical context

A 23-year-old male presents with pruritic, pustular lesions on his face and neck that have persisted for 3 weeks despite over-the-counter topical treatments. Physical examination reveals multiple erythematous papules with central punctation and surrounding erythema. The lesions are most prominent on areas of frequent shaving. A fungal culture and Gram stain would help differentiate this condition from other cutaneous inflammatory disorders.

Mnemonic

Folliculitis = Fungus, Follicle, or Foul (shaving) - all can cause hair follicle inflammation
