gastric adenocarcinoma
Definition
a malignant tumor arising from the glandular cells of the stomach lining
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man presents with progressive epigastric pain, early satiety, and weight loss over the past two months. Upper endoscopy reveals a large ulcerative mass in the antrum with irregular borders, and biopsy confirms the presence of malignant glands. His tumor markers are elevated, and CT scan shows regional lymphadenopathy. The patient undergoes subtotal gastrectomy with lymph node dissection. Histopathology confirms gastric adenocarcinoma with intestinal differentiation. The most common type of gastric malignancy in the United States is gastric adenocarcinoma.
