gastrojejunostomy
Definition
A surgical procedure creating an opening between the stomach and the jejunum
Clinical context
A 62-year-old woman with a history of peptic ulcer disease presents with recurrent abdominal pain and weight loss. She undergoes a surgical procedure that creates an anastomosis between the stomach and jejunum to bypass a severely ulcerated pylorus. Postoperatively, she experiences dumping syndrome with palpitations and diaphoresis after meals. The surgical intervention was performed to treat her gastric outlet obstruction.
Mnemonic
GastroJejunostomy = Gastro (stomach) + Jejunum (small intestine) = Stomach-to-intestine bypass
