Definition

A group of disorders characterized by the abnormal growth of trophoblastic tissue during or after pregnancy, including hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma

Clinical context

A 28-year-old woman presents with irregular vaginal bleeding and severe nausea at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Physical examination reveals an abnormally large uterus for gestational age, and ultrasound shows a 'snowstorm' appearance with no fetal heart tones. Beta-hCG levels are significantly elevated. A 35-year-old woman presents with coughing up blood and headaches after a molar pregnancy. Chest X-ray shows pulmonary nodules, and beta-hCG remains elevated despite treatment.
