Definition

Inflammation of the glomeruli in the kidneys, characterized by swelling and damage to the tiny blood vessels (glomeruli) that filter waste from the blood

Clinical context

A 12-year-old boy presents with hematuria, proteinuria, and elevated blood pressure. His mother reports that he had a strep throat infection two weeks prior. Physical examination reveals periorbital edema and bilateral lower extremity swelling. Urinalysis shows red blood cell casts and significant proteinuria. This presentation is consistent with post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
