the coughing up of blood from the respiratory tract
Clinical context
A 34-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with a two-day history of hemoptysis and chest pain. She denies fever, chills, or recent travel but reports a two-week history of fatigue and weight loss. On examination, she has dullness to percussion over the right lower lung field. Chest X-ray reveals a cavitary lesion in the right upper lobe with associated pleural effusion.
