Definition

A pathological condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in liver cells

Clinical context

A 55-year-old obese male presents with elevated liver enzymes and right upper quadrant pain. Imaging reveals diffuse fatty infiltration of the liver without evidence of cirrhosis or hepatitis. His history includes type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. The condition is often asymptomatic but can progress to steatohepatitis and fibrosis if left untreated.
