herniorrhaphy
Definition
surgical repair of a hernia by suturing the defect
Clinical context
A 45-year-old man presents with a painful swelling in his groin that increases with coughing and lifting. Physical examination reveals a reducible hernia sac. He undergoes herniorrhaphy with suturing of the defect. A similar procedure is performed on his 65-year-old father who presents with a larger, more complex hernia. Both patients recover well postoperatively.
