Definition

A pathological condition characterized by excessive activity or overproduction of sex glands (ovaries or testes)

Clinical context

A 28-year-old woman presents with irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, and acne. Laboratory tests reveal elevated levels of testosterone and LH. Physical examination shows enlarged ovaries with multiple cysts. The patient is diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, a form of hypergonadism. A 35-year-old man presents with early puberty, gynecomastia, and elevated testosterone levels. Blood work shows increased LH and FSH. Physical exam reveals enlarged testes. He is diagnosed with Leydig cell hyperplasia, another form of hypergonadism.
