hyperkeratosis
Definition
an abnormal condition characterized by excessive thickening of the outer layer of skin or mucous membranes due to increased keratin production
Clinical context
A 35-year-old patient presents with rough, scaly patches on the palms and soles that have been progressively worsening over 6 months. Physical examination reveals thickened, hyperkeratotic skin with a characteristic 'boot-shaped' appearance. The patient reports difficulty with daily activities due to painful cracking of the affected areas. A skin biopsy would show hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis. This condition is commonly associated with psoriasis and other chronic inflammatory skin diseases.
