hyperparathyroidism
Definition
A medical condition characterized by overactivity of the parathyroid glands, leading to excessive production of parathyroid hormone and elevated calcium levels in the blood
Clinical context
A 55-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with weakness, nausea, and confusion. She has a history of kidney stones and notes frequent bone aches. Laboratory studies reveal hypercalcemia with suppressed PTH levels. Imaging demonstrates a 2 cm mass in the left parathyroid gland. The patient undergoes surgical resection of the adenoma. Postoperatively, her calcium levels normalize within 24 hours.
