Clinical context
A 65-year-old female presents to the emergency department with confusion and seizures. She has been taking thiazide diuretics for heart failure and has been drinking excessive amounts of water. Her serum sodium level is 120 mEq/L. She is diagnosed with hyponatremia due to water intoxication. This patient's low sodium levels are causing cerebral edema and neurological symptoms.
