Definition
A condition characterized by an obstruction in the intestine, particularly the small intestine, preventing the passage of intestinal contents
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man presents to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for the past 24 hours. On examination, he has distended abdomen with high-pitched bowel sounds. CT scan reveals a loop of small bowel with air-fluid levels and signs of obstruction. He is diagnosed with ileus requiring surgical intervention.
