A contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by red sores and blisters
Clinical context
A 6-year-old child presents to the pediatric clinic with multiple red, painful sores on the face and hands that have been present for 3 days. The lesions started as small red bumps that quickly developed into honey-colored crusts. The child attends elementary school and has been in close contact with classmates who have similar skin lesions. Physical examination reveals multiple superficial ulcers with surrounding erythema and crusting.
