jejunostomy
Definition
A surgical procedure creating an opening into the jejunum for the purpose of feeding or decompression
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man with severe head trauma and intracranial hemorrhage requires prolonged mechanical ventilation and nutritional support. Despite nasogastric tube placement, the patient continues to aspirate and cannot tolerate oral intake. A jejunostomy is performed to provide direct enteral nutrition bypassing the stomach. A 55-year-old woman with Crohn's disease and bowel obstruction requires decompression and nutritional support. A jejunostomy tube is placed to relieve distension and provide parenteral nutrition while the bowel heals.
Mnemonic
