Definition

inflammation of the larynx

Clinical context

A 3-year-old child presents with a barking cough and hoarseness after a recent upper respiratory infection. On examination, the child has stridor and appears uncomfortable while speaking. The diagnosis of acute laryngitis is confirmed based on clinical presentation and history of viral illness. A 65-year-old smoker presents with progressive dysphonia and hoarseness lasting 3 weeks. Laryngoscopy reveals a mass lesion in the vocal cords with ulceration. The patient is diagnosed with laryngeal cancer after biopsy and staging.
