leiomyoma
Definition
A benign tumor composed of smooth muscle cells
Clinical context
A 35-year-old woman presents with heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain. Pelvic examination reveals a large, irregularly shaped mass in the uterine region. MRI shows a well-circumscribed, enhancing mass within the myometrium. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen demonstrates bundles of spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm arranged in a whorled pattern. The patient's symptoms are relieved after hysterectomy. What is the most likely diagnosis? Which of the following cell types is most commonly involved in this condition?
