leiomyosarcoma
Definition
a malignant tumor derived from smooth muscle cells that has a sarcomatous nature
Clinical context
A 65-year-old woman presents with a large abdominal mass and history of progressive abdominal pain. Imaging reveals a heterogeneous mass in the uterine myometrium with evidence of hemorrhage and necrosis. The tumor shows infiltrative growth patterns and has spread to adjacent organs. Histopathology demonstrates pleomorphic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and frequent mitotic figures. The diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma is confirmed based on immunohistochemical staining showing smooth muscle differentiation.
