lip/o sarc/o -oma

Definition

a malignant tumor derived from fat tissue

Clinical context

A 45-year-old man presents with a large, painless mass in his thigh that has been growing over several months. Imaging reveals a heterogeneous soft tissue mass with areas of fat density. Histopathology shows malignant spindle cells with lipoblastic differentiation. The tumor is composed of mature adipocytes with malignant features. This patient likely has liposarcoma, the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults. The prognosis depends on the histological subtype and extent of resection.
