lobectomy
Definition
Surgical removal of a lobe of an organ, such as a lung lobectomy or liver lobectomy
Clinical context
A 65-year-old smoker presents with a 3 cm peripheral mass on chest X-ray. Further imaging reveals a tumor confined to the upper lobe of the right lung with no evidence of lymph node involvement or distant metastasis. The patient undergoes a right upper lobectomy to treat the early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. Postoperatively, the patient experiences some respiratory distress but gradually recovers with pulmonary rehabilitation.
Mnemonic
Lobectomy = Lobe removal - think 'LOBE' as in 'LOST' - the lung lobe is lost/removed
