An abnormal increase in the number of lymphocytes in the blood or lymphatic system
Clinical context
A 28-year-old man presents with fatigue, night sweats, and swollen lymph nodes in his neck and armpits. His complete blood count shows a significantly elevated lymphocyte count of 5,000/μL with atypical lymphocytes. Further testing reveals chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
