lymphopoiesis
Definition
The process of formation or production of lymphocytes and other lymphoid cells
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with fatigue and frequent infections. Laboratory studies reveal pancytopenia with decreased lymphocyte counts. Further evaluation shows impaired bone marrow function affecting lymphocyte production. The patient's condition reflects a defect in lymphopoiesis, the process of lymphocyte formation. Her compromised ability to produce sufficient lymphocytes explains both her fatigue and increased susceptibility to infections.
Mnemonic
LYMPH POIESIS = Lymphocytes are produced in the bone marrow (POIESIS) just like other blood cells, but specifically for immune function
