A type of anemia characterized by the presence of large, immature red blood cells (macrocytes) in the blood

Clinical context

A 65-year-old patient presents with fatigue and weakness. Laboratory results show large, immature red blood cells on peripheral smear with a mean corpuscular volume of 115 fL. The patient has a history of heavy alcohol use and takes methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis.
