Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by an increased number of mast cells
Clinical context
A 35-year-old man presents with pruritus, flushing, and abdominal pain after eating certain foods. On examination, he has multiple brownish skin lesions. Laboratory studies reveal elevated serum tryptase levels and bone marrow biopsy shows increased mast cells. His symptoms are triggered by physical exertion and certain medications.
