Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by an increased number of melanocytes or excessive melanin production by melanocytes
Clinical context
A 35-year-old woman presents with numerous dark freckles and moles scattered across her face and arms. On examination, multiple hyperpigmented lesions are noted with irregular borders and varied colors. A biopsy reveals an increased number of melanocytes in the epidermis with increased melanin production.
