Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by excessive pigmentation or darkening of tissues
Clinical context
A 45-year-old woman presents with dark patches on her skin that have been progressively worsening over several months. Physical examination reveals hyperpigmented lesions on sun-exposed areas, and biopsy confirms increased melanin deposition in the epidermis. The patient has no significant past medical history but reports increased sun exposure while traveling.
