Definition
Inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord
Clinical context
A 22-year-old college student presents with sudden onset severe headache, fever, and neck stiffness. On examination, Kernig's and Brudzinski's signs are positive. Lumbar puncture reveals elevated white blood cells and decreased glucose in the cerebrospinal fluid. The patient is diagnosed with bacterial meningitis requiring immediate antibiotic treatment.
